Context: audit isn’t ongoing, so nothing to re-consider under aicpa guidelines, and feel like it’d be a great match for both sides honestly
You probably should report it to your firm just in case because even if they are not interested and the audit isn’t ongoing, it can bring up some independence isssues
Don't report it until you have the offer in hand if there is no future audit.
Since its private, I wouldn't worry about it.
When someone on my team did this with one of our private clients, they had to inform the firm that they were going to interview. They ended up having to be taken off the client and we had to document the heck out of it in the audit binder.
is there currently a signed engagement letter effective right now? If so, Independence guidelines REQUIRE you to remove yourself from the engagement from the moment you are considering employment, and report it to higher-ups on the engagement. Failure to do so can cause you to be stripped of your license (assuming you’re already a CPA), and your name to be published in all the accounting journals so everyone would know. Best case scenario if you don’t report it you simply get fired and forever struggle to find another job...
This doc is helpful (page 18 discusses “what if I am considering potential employment”): https://www.aicpa.org/interestareas/professionalethics/resources/tools/downloadabledocuments/plain%20english%20guide.pdf
From a practical perspective though, I get that it puts you in an awkward place. I just had a close friend leave the audit team to go work for his own public client’s internal audit dept. he was a manager on the audit engagement, and this is the 2nd largest audit client we have in the entire firm, and middle of the year during the audit... so it’s almost definitely getting picked up for PCAOB inspection this coming year and will scrutinized to no end. Having to go through all that put a ton of stress on him, but at the end of the day he’s so much happier at the new place.
So, you have to do what’s best for you, but do it the right way and try to be prepared for all possible scenarios. Good luck!
