The company typically asks for a range at the beginning of the process. Better to do any negotiations over the phone. A formal offer letter would likely come after you agree on a number verbally.
Yes, they did asked for the salary range, but sounds like my expected salary is above their range, but not too far from it. Their heir internal recruiter asked if the salary can be negotiated, and I agreed with it. So I want to be prepared if it is common to negotiate the salary when they first call me and extend a verbal offer.
Typically once they send the formal offer everything has already been negotiated otherwise it is a pain to keep amending formal offer and keep getting signatures. I negotiate when I receive verbal offer.
Start negotiating once they call you on the phone to give you the offer so that it can be included in the written offer as oppose to them having to adjust the offer letter/contract, that might delay the process.
