I've been in real estate law for over 10 years, most of which was spent in big law. In big law being a present parent with Littles was incredibly difficult. I am now at a boutique LA based real estate firm that is fully remote AND has amazing workd life balance. Truly never been less stressed by work since the early days of my career.
In short, yes, it is *possible* but completely depends on the firm. DM me if you are interested in discussing the position we currently have open.
Ugh. Maybe? I think I’ve been on for a few weeks only
In BigLaw CRE/finance. I have two young kids and it's not easy, but doable. I don't feel as pressed with deadlines as some of the other practice groups in the firm. I prioritize being offline 6-8:30pm to have dinner and bedtime with my family. During busy periods, I work every night. I do not work on weekends unless absolutely necessary. I'll do a couple hours Sunday night, but otherwise am totally offline/monitoring emails.
Similar experience here. When I started (8-10) years ago with no kids I was frequently working 8-6 or more commonly 8-7, with work at night sometimes too. Now with two small kids I’m in the office 8-5, and working at night (after 9pm) at least 2 nights/week and a few hours on Sundays depending on what’s going on.
Depends on the firm and area of speciality. More likely in resi or something like land use/zoning. Less likely in CRE dirt/equity or finance.
If you have some experience and you’re flexible on location, my firm also has a RE position open, I think. HunterMaclean in Savannah, GA. Beautiful city, great firm. It’s my fourth firm, and I’ve been with them for 13 years now. You won’t get BigLaw pay, but you won’t be in a HCOL area either. Great people who value family; Not many work after 6pm unless there’s a big deal happening, and while there’s usually a few in Saturday mornings it’s not a lot of folks.
I would absolutely love that but we just purchased a house here so relocation isn’t an option. But it’s really nice to hear that there are some positions out there in real estate that would allow me to have a life
Pro
Possible, just depends on practice group and clients. Same goes for any practice group, honestly.
If your superiors/partners/bosses implement a culture of boundaries, you can definitely find this in a RE practice.
The vibe I’m getting from my job offer def has me concerned about their lack of flexibility :/
I’ve said this before elsewhere, OP, but it really depends on the kind of real estate law. Are you doing residential closings all day? Or working in real estate private equity? Very, very different work-life balance there.
Well then in my experience—not personal experience, but observational—lawyers focused exclusively on residential real estate so have a decent work life thing. There may be times when you’re busy, but overall, from what I’ve heard and seen it’s isn’t bad. But the pay is much lower overall than what some other lawyers in private practice bring in.
Rising Star
Yes, very possible, both in commercial and especially in residential.
Rising Star
In the residential world, you’re probably working closer to a 9-5, but you’re going to be doing the same thing over and over and over again, for not a ton of money. In CRE, you’ll need to work a lot harder to set and hold firm boundaries on your schedule, and you’ll probably have to log back in once the kids are down, but the work is more interesting and challenging, and the money is much better.
Send me a message. My firm (Biglaw) is looking for real estate associates.
I’d love to but this won’t let me send messages
Yes
Been in the industry ~10 years and have never had balance. Biglaw + REPE.
Hello, I’m looking to get into Real Estate law. Do you mind sharing how you did it? Did you have any experience in it prior?
I haven’t gotten into it. I got one job offer that was rescinded without any explanation so I guess I’m not the right person to ask, sorry.
