It's hard to believe nobody is talking about regulating AI. We want to regulate everything including the type of stove top you cook on, yet for some reason we're ignoring a technology that can collapse society. This is just the tip of the iceberg for us. It's just a matter of time before a teacher faces discipline for something an AI-generated version of him said or did. We're reaching a point where your AI likeness and voice are practically indistinguishable from the real you. This is just one of many potentially catastrophic problems with AI, but we're just bopping along like it's still 1985.
I have to agree. ‘They’ are building an AI data center close to where I once lived. The community is pushing back. They do not want this in their community. I guess it’s very loud, like planes flying over all day and night (noise level is continuous); they believe their quality of life will be impacted negatively; it can take 10-20 years for build (constant construction); plus these data places suck up an immense amount of energy and water, etc. subsequently leading to higher prices in water and utilities.
We’re in for a bumpy ride and hopefully AI doesn’t get the b best of us
There’s even a name for these communities who are pushing back,
‘data center NIMBYism’ being an acronym for ‘not in my backyard.’
I agree with the thoughts on regulating AI. No matter republican or democrat, this is an area where we ought to be able to find common ground. Consider that AI is currently being used for even worse things than this.
It's interesting what's regulated and what isn't. There are certain regulations which are taken very seriously by the government which aren't really hurting or benefiting anyone. There are other things like AI, genetic testing, aspects of finance, ect, which really need to be regulated before many more people get hurt but aren't.
In many cases, follow the money. Some regulations are in place so the a combination of government and private entities can force us to pay for them. Other regulations are not in place so the same entities, and certain individuals, can profit from their development and trade. There are billions of dollars and a world wide market to be gained from the development of AI technology and American business and government wants to be the world leader of it. I do believe that our country and businesses should be able to profit in this area. It just needs to be done with enough regulation to protect people.
Interesting that not many teachers are commenting on this. Likely because many of them are using it to generate their assignments.
