It’s a Sunday evening and I’ve just received some slightly negative feedback for something I was quite excited about. I find working in media means constant feedback, although sometimes constructive, sometimes blunt, and sometimes just harsh. The longer I’m here the more I’ve learned not to take it personally, but it’s not always easy. Do you think having thick skin is essential in this industry, or can workplaces do more to make feedback healthier?

I think it's both. Many people I've worked at could benefit from a 101 human communications class. At the same time, people in the workplace are not likely to change, and the best way to get through it is by having thick skin. Easier said than done, I know.

100% I’ve met people who cannot communicate efficiently at all, especially considering we work in communication!

I am sorry to hear that. You have to learn to not take things personally or you will never survive this life. It would be easy to let something like that ruin your weekend by taking it personally.

Absolutely, I’m definitely not letting it affect me too much!

Feedback in this industry can feel brutal. I try to separate myself from the work. Not every note is about me, it is about the piece. Easier said than done, but it helps me keep perspective.

No exactly, I told myself it’s not personal and it’s just work

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer.
