I think union jobs are hard to get in general, because once folks get them, they tend to keep them long term. And a lot of unionized employers prefer those with union experience. How can you get union experience without someone willing to give you an opportunity for employment at a union establishment???
True, I’ve worked in unions environment before in a management capacity but now that I want to do front of house or hourly positions it’s hard to get into for some reason. one HR told me they have to hire union members Ist but the rep mentioned that it does not stop them from interviewing all potential candidates even if theyre not union members
I’ve never worked on a union location. So sorry if this is obvious, but you join the union, and then the company works with them to get jobs?
That’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. I’m wondering if it is a union-attached job that makes the process more involved. Although there is a lot of good that comes from it, IF you can get the job.
It sounds like you're getting conflicting information. You should probably apply through the hotel web sites, or however they accept applications. The way it usually works, so far as I know, is once you're employed you join the union.
That’s what I said was told to me. My previous thought was that I go to the union to apply to hotel jobs .

Yeah, that makes sense—union candidates often get priority, but it doesn’t mean outside applicants can’t be considered. Definitely a tricky part of the NYC hotel market.
