More important than the brand is having a good tailor! I have made clothes from old navy and amazon look amazing with good tailoring! Just last week I was wearing a $4 amazon brand shirt in a solid green color that got so many compliments because of good tailoring.
Jacket: shop around. Try them out. Always hang them and never ever do the steam in "the bathroom trick". If you travel for work do the one shoulder over the other trick to fold it and try to hang it as soon as you arrive to your destination.
Trousers: always tailor them! always! I make mine fit me like a good pair of jeans would.
I agree - I’ve worked with my tailor for about 20 years and now my teenage daughter swears by her, too.
I tailor pretty much everything that isn’t underwear. I almost always get my pants hemmed and the waist taken in because I’m curvier than the standard sizes. For jackets, it’s easy to nip in at the waist - I usually hem my sleeves, but I have on occasion shortened a jacket to make it look more modern.
A few tips:
-it’s easier to make an item smaller than larger, though depending on the seams, some things can be let out
-for jackets, make sure the shoulders fit - everything else can be cut down
-if it’s washable, wash it first so you know how much it will shrink
-take the shoes/bras with you that you will wear with the garment so you can see how it will hang
-it’s easiest to alter on a seam - if there isn’t one, the tailor might be able to create one, but it will change the look of the item
-if you’re particularly short waisted or long waisted, it can be hard to alter dresses to fit your torso - so better to buy one that fits your torso (and your shoulders) and then alter the hips and bust
-it costs more to alter lined clothing
-sometimes something as little as shortening the strap of a dress or nipping in the waist can dramatically change how well an item fits
Most of my work clothes are Theory and MM Lafleur. I have a few things from The Fold that I love.
J crewwww
Soft Surroundings
Never heard of this one! Thanks for the recommendation!
There are so many options here and not just one brand I would recommend looking at EXPRESS, J.Crew and Taylor even Amazon has some really inexpensive options. Also look at Ann Taylor loft.
No, Nordstrom also has some great options as well as Nordstrom rack
MMlafleur, Ann Taylor, Quince
I was in a rut so I used Stitch Fix a few times to change up my style
Eileen Fisher for the win. Simple styles, timeless colors, easy to build a solid capsule wardrobe and add in accessories to show your personality.
I'm a big fan of Banana Republic. I think their pants are incredible, especially their tapered and ankle designs. Definitely look into them!
Check sales on Net-a-Porter for high end luxury at discounted prices. You can find some great pieces that you could build an outfit around.
Talbots has historically had good blazers.
Boden can have good ones too.
Ann Taylor.
Any recommendations for jeans? Madewell is usually my go-to but I’m not liking any of the styles or color combos. I heard good things about Good American but the return policy sucks.
Zara’s got some great ones now
Rent-the-Runway. Get the monthly. It’s literally my most efficient expense. I only get dresses. So every spot is an outfit. I never have to dry clean. I always have that fun new outfit feel. Once in awhile with a new label the sizes are way off and I can’t use the dress. But the reviews are super helpful in figuring out what might fit. Also now they will pick up your rentals and drop them off so I don’t even need to drop off the returns.
The Real Real is the best. Depends on your style, my creative outlet is clothing, classy but creative I’d say, I suit up pretty much daily, my go to brands are Alice & Olivia, L’Agence, Cinq a sept and Staud.
Meshki, Diish, Nakd Fashion, Song of Style
Alice and Olivia, Ted Baker, L’Esceles - I look for sales first but sometimes my FOMO gets the best of me for a full price item.
Ann Taylor for staples.
Zara for a few modern signature seasonal pieces that I can donate when I’m bored with them in a few months.
Also, if you have GF’s with similar size, a swapping party can be a ton of fun and a great way to extend the life of old favorites (what’s old is new again).
