I’ve been applying mostly through LinkedIn and company websites but response rates have been terrible. Surprised that even company websites aren’t effective, is networking basically the only way people are landing interviews now? I don’t have a huge professional network so that advice always stresses me out a little.

It's abysmal out there. "Spray and pray" is what I do. I really don't expect replies except for a small percentage.

Yeah, applying only through LinkedIn + company sites can be brutal rn. A lot of the time it’s not even the applications themselves, it’s that your resume isn’t getting enough keyword match or is getting parsed weird by ATS before anyone sees it.

If you haven’t already, I’d test the same resume against a few job posts and see where it falls short. I did that once and found out my resume was missing tiny stuff like exact tool names and a couple job-title phrases I never would’ve thought mattered.

Also, if you’re tailoring every app manually, that gets exhausting fast and the quality drops. I ended up using ResumeJudge plus a couple others like Jobscan and Resume Worded just to compare how different they scored the same resume, and it was eye-opening.

Are you applying to roles where the job post says “preferred” skills but the resume barely matches those words, or is it more like you’re getting no replies even on pretty close fits?

I got my last 2 jobs through either actual human recruiters or former colleagues. I even had trouble getting my resume through the website application to the former colleague who did hire me. He had to ask a human in HR to find it for him. That put the dismal response percentage I had been getting into some perspective! I found networking at a big trade show to be useless as well. No calls. In this market, former colleagues and motivated human recruiters are your best bet.

I've actually gotten some from real people and some generic potentially human responses with specific enough details to make me think a human was involved. Lots of no responses though.

I’ve gotten all mine through cold applying. These days probably a good idea to try to network along with cold applying.

Still works, but a contracting company got me my current role. They helped me sell myself better plus they talked to my work references so I had real backup for what I had on my resume.

Networking can help, but having the right preparation is key. Using PracHub for real interview questions and coding practice can boost your chances in the tech hiring process.

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?

I am a visually impaired practitioner in South Africa, with 7 years of experience, and as soon as recruiters or business owners hear/read that I'm disabled, the conversation gets awkward and I never hear from them again.

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?
