My district considered moving to a 4-day week last year, and while it sounded great at first, the more I thought about it, the more concerns I had. Parents were really worried about finding childcare on that extra day off, and some of my students already struggle to get enough meals at home over the weekend. I love the idea of more time for planning and a little more WLB, but I wonder how it really plays out in practice.

My biggest concern is for the students who feel like school is there only safe place, or the ones who have food insecurity.

Would they make the 4 school days longer to make up the lost time? Extend the year? Students have to be in school here for 180 days. 🤷‍♀️

I thought about this one year and calculated: if we have 4 days of school per week and still need to teach 180 days a year while taking holidays off, we'd be in school year-round and we wouldn't get any long breaks. I'm not quite sure this is appealing for everyone.

like

Of course if they made it another four day in-person and then did an asynchronous day, we could still get in those 180 days

We've had talk about doing that, but I don't think it's every going to happen. It creates problems in the community with childcare, of course. And it doesn't really seem to create savings that would justify it. I would love to have it happen, but I think it's one of those ideas that only sounds great until you really explore all the implications.

What will happen to teacher pay since we would be teaching one less days?

I was part of a committee for my kids school that thought about switching. They wanted to switch to save money but they found it didnt really save money. There are a couple schools around us who have switched and some love it for teacher retention.

As long as teachers didn't get a pay deduction I think it would be great! I am sure that some districts would add extra duties or training to their teachers

My sister in law teaches at a school that does four days. It saves money for the building maintenance. The teachers go a week longer for PD at the beginning of the year. She likes it. Her school has been doing it for a few years. Also in my state many small school districts do a four day week and they love it. They do go a little longer in the day but actually with afternoon school programs they go less time. The teachers get the same pay and do a few more days PD to meet teacher required days. Since school is not school anymore and just child care many states won’t move to a four day. My school does a “four “ in five days with extra long classes on Thursday and Friday. We struggle to get students here on those days. Academics are not a priority for many. Home life is rough for many students all over the nation. Our nation needs to fix our problems at home and schools could be schools again. Personally I have been teaching a long time with 4 1/2 does which were the best situation

For any real estate investors

22 years old and currently focused on using my left over income to invest and pay off my debt. I am set to pay off my college loans by next year and, when I do, I want to look into investing into real estate. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get into/learn more about real estate investing? Or how I can have enough knowledge on the topic to be able to invest wisely when the time comes?

Any books? youtubers? etc. How did you all learn about it?
