I think it's probably good if you have free time and your team is in a good place as well. You must have done well putting people to work in the right areas and hiring the best possible people for it. Having free time means that when a fire does break out, you can manage things quite well
Yes, if you can build a good team, this is normal to start feeling bored. This is the time to use your extra free time to challenge your team for the next level of growth. To start thinking about what the team looks like in 2-3-5 years and start getting the team excited about that vision. You can also use extra time to provide mentorship to your team and start preparing one of them to take your role whether you're ready to move up in the org. You also can use it as an opportunity to take some work off your boss's plate to start demonstrating you're ready for the next level. Not all of those things at once, but this is the time to bring intention to the role and shifting your focus to long-term growth.
I second this. It’s important to learn what each person on your team wants to do as they grow so you are not putting them in a role they dislike later on. When they see your vision includes their growth and promotion, they are less likely to jump to another job. If someone does leave, you will have thought enough about their skills to have a succession plan in place.
Also get to know other leaders in the org. Those are the people who will help you get more done when you need to move obstacles for your team.
Very good job on building your team, many things you can do when your bored, look at your team is everyone performing about their expected goals? If not find the ones that are really close everyday and watch what they are doing, are they using the right methods are they adding steps to their work that doesn't need to be. Then figure out what you need to do to make the a little bit better. Being a leader doesn't end when everyone knows the job.
Another thing to add is networking outside of your department - your level or your boss’s level.
If you work with these other departments, I would suggest that you already have recurring meetings with them.
If it isn’t an area your team works with, I would see if they are interested in talking about how that dept manager is handling their dept, what their department does, etc. see if they are interested in a catchup 15 min call a few times a year.
These can be short and sprinkled throughout your calendar.
Try to enjoy some of the downtime. You never know when you’ll be in panic mode again when you have to replace that next employee. Focus on the long term vision and your strategy to get there. I’ve been through this lately as well. It’s challenging going from survival mode to finally getting traction to being able to breathe finally and you feel like you don’t have things to do because some of the day to day busy work is back off your plate.
Have always considered it a personal success when I have worked my self out of a position. Meaning that if I tweak the team and develop skills to a point where I am no longer needed than I have done my job. Time to move on to the next challenge.
