came here looking for inspo but realized it’s just me and a bunch of other me’s
Same! Lol
Are you guys me?
Haha, perhaps. It sounds like my situation is not uncommon. Like some kind of middle management career crisis?
I’m sorry. You sound like you’re burnt out. You need to take time off to just chill. Not think about this or the future but just to relax. At least 2 weeks (with most states RE-opening, you might be able to get away).
Then come back - hopefully energized - and explore the many different opportunities based on what you enjoy.
Planning time off so your team knows is a first big step. Yes, it’s never a good time to take time off but you have to. Burnout is terrible for anyone and it generally impacts team morale.
It’ll be challenging with COVID, but states are reopening. Maybe do a road trip to some coastal / fun area that’s accessible to you and where you can still social distance.
I find that 2 weeks do the trick: you need 3-4 days just to work through that checking email / messages itch then you can start to disconnect even more, to the point where you can forget what day it is.
Good luck!
It seems like half the posts in FB are from people obsessing over if they’re going to get promoted or how to climb to the next rung. I just wonder how many of them are junior staff that really don’t understand the work and sacrifice it takes to get where they think they want to be.
Having lots of money and an important sounding job title is great, but it’s a ton of work and responsibility as well. I feel like I I understand that now and it’s ok to admit it’s not for me, but not sure what to do next.
Agreed, career paths are highly personal and it doesn’t do much good to compare, you have to do what’s best for you. Problem is, I’m not really sure what I want, that’s why I thought maybe some coaching could help.
It kind of reminds me of my freshman year in college though. I swear 2/3 of my freshman floor was pre-med at the start, but by the end of the year all but a handful had switched to other majors. Not necessarily a good or a bad thing to switch, but interesting to see people change their minds after getting a taste of what it takes to become an MD.
I’ve got a variety of experience, mainly PMO for system implementations, but some techno-functional knowledge as well. I could probably jump to industry or independent consulting, but kind of over the SI world. I feel like I want to do something different, just not sure what and was thinking maybe some coaching would help me sort it out.
Potentially, I just feel like I’m so over managing teams, dealing with clients, acting as team mediator/therapist. I know that’s kind of my job as PM, but I’m definitely burnt out and looking for other options. I worry Program Manager would just mean I was responsible for managing even more drama across a larger portfolio though.
same here. been in consulting for the past decade primarily along the lines of system implementation - business analyst, architecture, ppm. losing the fire within me. what to do next
so... what do we do
Same story, im an M4 and struggling with internal politics, unreasonable and annoying clients and just the constant pressure from P.
There will always be someone who is worst off than you. Doesn't negate your concerns or mean you should trick yourself to be content with your situation. I think it's just important to make sure that you're not complaining to the wrong people or in the wrong way. I know that sounds a bit silly, but there is a big difference in how we say things.
OP - did you get anywhere with this? Just curious and interested, as am in a very similar position
Haha, no, not really. I’m trying to decide if I need to quit my job or just take a long vacation. I think I might start with the vacation part.
