You could always do a midlife crisis MBA into something more exciting
I’m sort of with you. I’ve been debating if I want to start looking for FP&A/Corp jobs to get some more time back in my life or if I just want to do something different even if it’s still client facing.
I’m not quite sure if I just don’t like the job itself or if I’m just generally getting burnt out.
Exactly, I like my firm and coworkers, but I’ve noticed myself dreading the job more and more. And when I see how much of a toll this job can take on people who are the next few positions above me, it doesn’t seem to get any better, even if the money is good.
Think I’m just starting to value different things in my career now that I’m a few years in.
There’s nothing wrong with a career in audit despite the fishies who want to tell you otherwise. Whenever I interview anyone from audit I always caution them about the lack of predictability about FDD and the constant fire drills. As much as we try and prevent or minimize them, unfortunately it’s a reality in our business that we get data room access on a Friday or Saturday and have to be prepared for management calls early the following week.
You seem to be throwing out a lot of different things - audit, tax, sales, etc. I don’t know how many years into your career you are but think about where you want to be in 10 years and what positions you best.
Would depend on why you don’t like it
Yup. It’s just not for everyone.
I would look into corp FP&A where your skills are transferable and it’s more predictable/stable. You’d experience quite a humbling setback going into sales. And there’s a reason you left audit so that’s not a great solution long term.
I’ve considered this as well, the salaries just look rough in FP&A. You bring up a good point though
Coach
Depends on how you process these inner struggles and evolve over time.
Stress/Struggle is eternal in my opinion. Different positions, different role, different stress. It would change, but won’t disappear. This is life.
