I’ve been thinking about transitioning from town to state government after five years in a small municipal department. I’m ready for a new challenge, but I know things can be very different at the state level—bigger teams, more bureaucracy, and a wider scope of impact. Has anyone here made that leap? What were the biggest adjustments you had to make, and were there any surprises you wish you’d known ahead of time? Would love any advice or insight on what to expect in making the shift!

Prepare to feel invisible. In town government, your work has immediate impact—at the state level, you’re a cog in a machine that moves sloooow. Unless you're in leadership, it’s easy to get lost.

I made that shift and love it. I was looking for more of a challenge and found it at the state level. Yes everything is bigger but that also invites more variety in my work and provides more opportunities outside of my immediate position. I'm sure not always the case, but in my experience my coworkers are on a different level- my supervisor provides minimal oversight because we are trusted professionals and it's refreshing to work with those that don't abuse that trust. There's less workplace pettiness and though we have a huge workload with (and if I'm being honest) not enough resources- there is much more support and understanding within the organization to complete that work and you're not really "on your own". It makes work-life balance realistic and even with a huge workload I can sleep at night knowing I have the support. I'd say scope out state workers in the area you want to get into and see what their experience is- and at this point in time and federal funding getting pulled, get an idea if they feel secure in their jobs!

I'm feeling incredibly anxious and honestly depressed right now because of work. I had already been feeling demotivated and wanting to leave but I was told on Monday that I was being out on probation for one year (I am not going into detail on this). And now my manager is pressing me about finding a new project role as I have been on the bench for more than a month, and one possible one may require travel. I just want to get out of my job now and hear back from the 10+ applications I have now.

Hi fishes,
Want some feedback for Employees Assistant Program (EAP) by Capgemini which provides facilities to connect with Therapist.
Actually I am going through some tough times(going through a divorce), want to connect to EAP to discuss my mental health issues.
I had connected once and they say that the conversations are strictly confidential.
Just wanted to know do they really keeps stuff confidential or can they inform my Manager regarding the personal conversations.
