I’ve heard all kinds of advice, negotiate everything, wait until the offer, anchor high, don’t push too hard. In reality, it’s hard to know what strategies actually work without risking the offer. A recruiter said she is going to send me the offer today, what are the most effective (and safest) approaches to salary negotiation? Any common mistakes i should avoid?

Don’t try to negotiate one item at a time (salary, bonus, perks). Typically they only have a few levers they can pull, better to talk about the total comp package

like

I frame it in Total Comp. Besides, ain’t the job all about being an effective negotiator?

From recent experience — use data, including current or projected comp, comp packages from other offers or potential offers, etc. Make sure your tone is reasonable and constructive, so they know you’re trying to get to a “yes” rather than just jerking them around

Thanks, yes I was looking online data hope it’s helpful

With any negotiation lead with enthusiasm about the firm and the work you’d get to do there. The hiring partners and firm management want people who are excited to grow the firm, so even though we’re all employed to make money, make sure they feel like you’re not just looking to collect a paycheck. This often helps grease the wheels. Good luck!

Read the room, or the interviews and conversations leading up to it. Different strategies and tactics do best in certain situations. Has a lot to do with the firm, too.

Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I am EOR on a number of structures in development, I manage EITs and Drafters (within projects; I'm not a supervisor), and am doing a lot in general. I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
