I’ve honestly had way more success networking on Reddit, Discord, and even random Slack groups than I ever have on LinkedIn. On LinkedIn, everything feels so polished and performative. Real talk: where do you find your strongest job leads these days? Is it worth still spending hours polishing my profile, or should I just double down on the places where people actually talk?

LinkedIn is a performative circus. Real connections happen in smaller, unfiltered spaces. Ditch the fake humblebrags and go where the real conversations are.

Totally agree about LinkedIn. It’s superficial and something about it feels disingenuous.

Can you share some of the subreddits you recommend?

LinkedIn has too many useless posts, promos, and scams these days, but it’s good to keep your profile up to date. More exposure is always good.

The only networking which I've ever found to be really valuable happened in person. If you meet someone through work, or at some industry function, and you establish a rapport, that's worth a thousand inane connections on LinkedIn. Most online networking is just weird log rolling and it doesn't amount to much in any real way.

I am applying for summer internship at goldman sachs, bengaluru. I have just completed 3 months of intenship. I have done BBA from government college( waiting for last semester exam) but passed CFA level 1 exam and currently level 2 candidate. I am focusing on skills like excel and power bi. What exactly it takes to get the internship?

Different platforms have different vibes. I’ve joined some groups on FB, Reddit, and Discord, and it’s great for more down-to-earth conversations. People still brag and use theatrics, but less than some of the other sites.

This is really good to know because I find Linked in to be completely useless. I have several friends who think it is the most amazing app ever and I don't agree. I have never gotten a job opportunity through Linked in.

I use LinkedIn primarily to keep up with coworkers and people I’ve met in person rarely do I connect with people or leads on there maybe the rare “congrats” notification

Networking: I’m trying to build a network with MBB employees but I’m searching for roles in another country where I’ve got minimal school connections. Should I start by building a network in my home country and ask them if they can put me in touch with someone in my target location? Or just go straight to people in my intended location with cold requests/emails? Thoughts and views welcome!

How do you handle people’s kids showing up on video meetings? Screaming, kicking, hamming it up, (wasting time.) Everyone else is coo-ing…I’m not a kids person. Heard a technique which is to drop off the call bc you “assume the call is over” (which seems like a great way to get fired especially if it’s a way higher up’s kids - plus it feels rather passive aggressive.) Thoughts?

My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.

Need career advice. Trying to break into a finance role, preferably an Analsyt role but I have no transferable experience. I worked as a mortgage loan officer (which is sales) for 2 years after college, but since mortgage is such a niche industry, no hard skills transfer and have no relevant undergrad internships unfortunately. I know I can essentially get any sales job I want in finance IE: financial advisor etc. but don’t want to be stuck in sales forever. Any advice?
