Call people who you would want to be your reference first to prep them. I rarely give my old manager’s contact when asked, I typically have a friend do it and tell them what I want them to say.
Exactly, I do the same thing. Plus, some companies prohibit their managers from replying to reference requests, and instead forward the request to HR.
You don't have 3 friends? Joking, but also very serious.
Some companies use The work number to avoid lawsuits. Do you know what the employment verification process is for your old employers?
Sounds like a reference vs employment verification.
I live in the UK, this is standard for mid-career and above level references (so anything above graduate) in consulting. I just started a new role and I handed them the companies general number and HR emails. No issues 👍🏽
If you also have exit letters (the letter they give you at the end of your employment) this will speed up the referencing process.
I didn’t have a bad relationship with my old managers… it’s just that I didn’t have a relationship with my managers from 4+ years ago lol. In short, don’t reach out to them. It’s just a simple ‘did they work here and how many years/months verification’. If it was a character reference they would say.
It’s different in the US. Employment verification is done via a background check. When they ask for a reference, they want to talk to someone to hear about your strengths, work style, etc. The only time you get a letter when exiting is if you were severed.
