Most companies are very happy to have “their guy” (or girl). Starting this week, next week, or month from now may not make a huge difference, especially since there’s usually a 1 to 2 quarter learning curve for any new hire.
I’d suggest reaching out to the HR team and/or your hiring manager and explain the situation. I’d suggest reiterating that you still plan to work for the company, you just need to take care of this immediate situation first to be able to start in good conscience. Any good company would find a way to accommodate that ask.
Yes, explain the situation to them and be prepared for either acceptance or rejection.
Sibling, my heart goes out to you. I hope you can get an extension. I have not personally had this issue, but on a lucrative assignment I had in the past, I had to get off that assignment to assist with caring for my Grandmother. Financially the worst thing I could do at that time. Emotionally not even a question. If I had her back, I'd do it all again. Steel yourself for the worst, but I'm hoping good will prevail for you.💙☮️
