It's always a lottery ticket. In a sense it's like a rite of passage, perhaps everyone should work for a startup once in their life just to say they did it. A lot of times it ends badly, but the stories you carry away can be pretty good. At least that's now it went for me. I wound up more or less broke, but I learned a lot. Much of what I learned was what not to do ever again, but those lessons are also quite valuable.
Lottery ticket. Not a straight scam because there's at least the potential it'll pay off. The likelihood is just very small.

In most cases, it is a lottery ticket. I only take equity seriously when the base pay is still fair and the dilution and exit path are clearly explained.
