Just lateraled into big law from a boutique corp firm. I’m a mid level. I’m struggling to understand what is and isn’t billable. Do people actually bill reading emails? How do you describe that? Anything else I should bill (and how should I describe these things) that aren’t as obviously as like actively drafting?

Bill everything you do for a client. Reading emails? Bill. Updating checklist? Bill. Watching King of the Hill and thinking about the order of closing documents. Bill.

Agreed with the above: capture all of the time you are occupied on behalf of your job. Some clients balk at time entries that say only “review x from y re z,” in which case I’d roll that time into a deliverable/substantive entry if I had one that day. I also basically never write “review correspondence” in time entries. Words like “analyze” or “assess” are apparently more acceptable, at least to my clients, and I just add in something about the substance of the email rather than specifying correspondence.

I go with attention to correspondence regarding [substantive topic] or counseled and advised regarding [substance] if basically trading emails but maybe they don't necessarily get a deliverable that day.

Agreed. I was discussing something with another associate today. After we spoke, I did more research. It’s part of the diligence, so I billed all of it.

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

If you’re succeeding on all the right metrics (i.e., leadership loves you, clients love you, you’re participating on pitches, you’ve brought in clients, and you’re set up to inherit a book of business), but you’re still not super into it, being promoted to income partner won’t change things, right? Worth sticking out to see or jumping to go in house at a pre-IPO, late stage startup you find super exciting and interesting?

Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
