Bill everything you do for a client. Reading emails? Bill. Updating checklist? Bill. Watching King of the Hill and thinking about the order of closing documents. Bill.
Agreed with the above: capture all of the time you are occupied on behalf of your job. Some clients balk at time entries that say only “review x from y re z,” in which case I’d roll that time into a deliverable/substantive entry if I had one that day. I also basically never write “review correspondence” in time entries. Words like “analyze” or “assess” are apparently more acceptable, at least to my clients, and I just add in something about the substance of the email rather than specifying correspondence.
I go with attention to correspondence regarding [substantive topic] or counseled and advised regarding [substance] if basically trading emails but maybe they don't necessarily get a deliverable that day.
Agreed. I was discussing something with another associate today. After we spoke, I did more research. It’s part of the diligence, so I billed all of it.
