Did you... not know the train stop was there? The L is loud. I assumed everyone knew that. Not sure what you think your landlord will be able to do.
The e landlord will tell you to go take a hike but obviously you should ask them to install insulation. Otherwise do it yourself? Might be worth it!
You're probably screwed regarding sound and temperature insulation, as those things aren't as simple as getting a new microwave. But asking cannot hurt. Regarding heating/cooling costs. My apt building gave me the past 12 months of electricity costs as an indicator because heat is electric. Is that a disclosure you got? If not, ask.
So to answer some questions:
- I moved here from NYC last week. I asked the previous tenant if it was loud and she said no - it’s a friend of a friend whose lease we took over.
- this is my second apartment and I haven’t really negotiated before / know what to look for tbh
- I’m more than happy to try and break the lease because it’s really loud

Ok.
So on the one hand, you are absolutely out of luck. “The train is louder than my friend of a friend said it would be” is not grounds to break your lease.
On the other hand, Chicago rental laws basically let you get out of any lease as long as they can find someone to take it over. If you tell your landlord you want out they are obligated to make a good faith effort to re-rent your place. So that’s probably your best bet.

Is it an old building/walk up? We also have terrible noise insulation and our bills are indeed high. Downstairs neighbors can hear everything we do and I can hear every car horn on the street. May need to look into newer/luxury buildings to avoid this
Old building. It’s on N Orleans and North
