Didn’t vote for him but here is my main take. Latinos due to their religious background, the machismo, and some aspects of our culture like believing discipline is intimidating someone else (ex: your children). Makes them like the idea of this strong intimidating men that will “put everything in order”. You can see this not just with Trump but leaders on the left and right in Latam like Bukele, Uribe, Chavez, Petro, Bolsonaro, etc.
Yes. If I wanted to live around criminals I’d just go back to where my family came from. The weather is much nicer
I definitely didn’t vote for Trump however here’s a few things that make the list when I speak to those that did:
1. Catholicism
2. The border & safety - many didn’t have it easy as immigrants themselves or as first generation citizens. They know the hardships they faced to get away from a lot of what people are running from in Latam. It wasn’t easy to build what they have here and hearing that those “criminals and gang members” are walking into this country now has to be frightening. C1’s original point.
3. Again they built their lives and it wasn’t easy. Many welcome legal immigrants, it’s illegal immigration that’s a problem for them.
4. There’s a lot of machismo within the culture to A1’s point. This doesn’t apply in their corporate culture from my personal experiences in Latam and traveling to different countries but I do see it more often amongst blue collar Latinos.
5. Related to #4, could this be a misogynist retaliation to the recent win by a woman in Mexico? That had to be a blow to the machismo narrative of so many stuck in their ways.
6. That desire to be included and seen as equal. Sad but common. I take pride pronouncing my name with extra spice to make sure they didn’t get confused and answering “I’m from CA” and ending that conversation there. I enjoy being unique. I recognize many people don’t. They relate to conservatives and feel seen during elections which is misguided, but it is what it is.
7. Racism.
