Lion / Pencil / One Show winners.....did your award winning ideas start with the traditional brief / strategy / insight / creative process? Or was it a lightning strike?

Always briefs. Never write ideas just to win awards. Just try and do something different.

Lightening strikes. Followed by well done case study videos/write-ups that very specifically spoke to the requirements of the categories for which the work was submitted.

I’ve had briefs with baked in celebs that we all knew would kill it. Those are good but rare. So most of the award sweeps happened for us when we all work together, believe in the idea and change strat/media/creative as it evolves. I find you have to believe in the ideas and...this is the secret sauce...you have to have the fortitude to stand by the idea and help your clients believe too. We have an idea that is successfully rounding the awards show this year. We knew it had potential to do this, so as a team we agreed to only show that 1 idea in our client meeting. Wasn’t a phone in round one meeting either. Flew everyone out for the big show. I won’t give away the exact details of meeting, but client was happily surprised and the rest is in the books 😉. You have to believe in heart and in action. Briefs, lighting strikes and voodoo magic are nothing without heart and action. Good luck all!

Never received a brief for any of the Lions/Pencils. But worked on teams where everyone was super strategic within their given discipline. I will note that I’ve won the most Lions with campaigns ideated, designed and produced by small teams. 5 person hybrid teams seem to be the sweet spot.

Oof great question - subscribed to this post.

Yea. The only common thread was just trying as hard as we could. Actually, no, the REAL common thread is that every good project reaches a point where it’s most likely going to die. But the few that made my career had a whole team behind us fighting to keep it alive, right up to the guy who’s name was on the door.

This is my experience as well. You’ve got to try your damnedest to keep the dream alive even when it seems so likely that it won’t. And sometimes that means doing half the shit yourself. It’s exhausting but no good project had an easy ride, uphill the whole way.

Thanks for your responses. Very interesting to hear the range of experiences.

And congrats on your wins 🙌🏻

All of the above.

The one constant in each was a great client.

Lightening strike in one instance. Long grueling project with top talent in another. Never been done before in another.

A brief, well written and inspiring

like

Definitely a little of both. Had an idea for the product that didn’t come from the brief but we used the brief to craft the writing and message so we could sell it

like

we had an “executional” brief but if the results had not been so amazingly great, we would never have even bothered to enter the work in shows.

Briefs. But not linear process. Instead I wrote a brief, that we dismantled and put back together as a team. And then the ideas wrote themselves. AND because we’d been through the first exercise of ripping up the brief, everyone felt comfortable talking to each other about right/wrong/good/bad etc.

Aww this is beautiful

Super good question

Really value the information put forward by strategy and use it like a weapon. Push through all the times it seems like the dream is doomed. There are thousands of Cannes winning ideas in the bin because of outside/political shit. Gotta keep rolling til you hit that 20.

Brief.

like

Lightning strike. If you mean got a worthless brief did a bunch of research and found an insight and then worked the creative process. Or you know, “just thought it up”.

like

I’d say 50/50. Half the time its the briefed work that somehow made it all the way to market, and half the time its proactive ideas that we brought to the client with out a client brief, but based off of agreed upon brand strategies. 20 lions. 8 pencils

1. Rating is only applicable on variable pay

3. Hike depends on a lot of factors like your current salary, how is it comparable to the market or the level you are in, do you have a progression/promotion, etc
