I lived on 95th and 3rd until 2 years ago and it was fine. I came home late on the subway to 96th St and never had a problem. But above 96th St East of 3rd Ave. seemed less safe. I would stay west of 3rd Ave, but don’t know if that’s changed.
Act like you belong and stay aware of your surroundings. It’s nyc
It’s actually nice there. Close to the park and the river. Lots of good restaurants nearby.

I used to live on 96 and 3rd. Never felt unsafe but did not spend any time east of 2nd or north of 98th there.
It’s fine. That building is fine. You will basically never walk north. And that’s ok.
