When you get the call...listen and take notes. Ask questions, get a clear understanding of next steps. Say you need to review the paperwork and will be in touch with any questions. They will offer you severance. Do not try to negotiate it during this call.
A few things that impact severance:
1. Senior title = argument for more severance because it takes longer to find a job...less positions, higher salary, etc.
2. Time at agency = more money because you typically get x per year worked + you can argue that you have been out of the market longer so you need time to do your resume, reach out to people, etc.
3. Language in your contract
4. Your agency’s policy
My best advice is to contact a lawyer and do not be hurried into signing anything.
I just went through this. Good advice. Although none of it mattered much. They were able to lean on a written holding company policy about severence...not great really, only 1 week per year....didn't even pay me for working majority of last year. Also didn't get bonus. They can say it's all discretionary so not sure what leverage employees have. Now with virus, job hunting even more bleak. I saved money though for a rainy day. People need to prioritize savings over debt.
3-4 mo of insurance
I’m also interested in this. How do you plan to go about requesting severance?
Yeah this is definitely new information to me haha. Hopefully won’t have to use it but appreciate having the knowledge - thanks!
