M&A folks, am I losing my mind or have deal timelines gotten extremely compressed in the last ~5 years or so? When I started (8 yrs ago), it felt like 30-45 days was the norm for exclusivity/expectations to signing. Lately, anything like 30 days or more feels like a gift, with many deals pushing to sign (from start) in 2 or 3 weeks (sometimes even less). MM PE, for context

The problem (in my experience) is that we rarely ever actually sign before 30-60 days but sprint for the entire period under the guise of needing to sign now. Not fun at all lol

Makes sense for PE MM, that’s why I prefer strategics

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

Only barely worked for 2 months, but starting to soak up some realities that makes me wonder "are all firms a little like this"?

One partner drinks alcohol nearly every day in his office

One senior associate unashamedly talks about his coke habit ("come on, at least a third of V100 lawyers do coke regularly, but they don’t admit it like I do")

Several partners claim that their kids can do anything they want.. EXCEPT choose big law and their parents’ lives.

Should I stay or should I go? 😯

Started at firm in second week of March and am at 1,700 right now, on pace for 2,000+. M&A 7th year. Who else is this busy? Keep reading M&A down across the board, but not feeling it here…

Obviously love the job security, but am at lockstep bonus firm and pretty sure at this point bonus will be on base scale last year, so kinda bummed about that.

Is it important to tell recruiters your end goal when first reaching out? For example, I’m interested in switching from litigation to transactional, but my eventual goal is to go in house. Is that important to mention or precarious? Would recruiters have insight into the best way to make that goal happen?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?
