PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

This viewpoint is so toxic. There’s been plenty of recessions without cuts. Aside from Latham and Goodwin I’m not worried. Also I think if you do private financial work you’ll be more secure than public markets work. However again not every recession is 08.

like

Lol on the private side? Plenty of them. Not all of us do public m and a. Shockingly there are other practices and they’re more “recession proof”.

From where did you get the doomsday crystal ball? My firm (national plaintiffs firm) is exploding, and we are hiring lawyers weekly it feels.

Product Counsel, by “productive parts of the economy” you mean companies like Meta that are directly responsible for massive increases in depression, teen suicide, political polarization, and fake news? Please. We would be lucky if the plaintiffs bar sued them out of existence.

Hi fishes, in a dilemma....switched to a Big4 from MNC(almost 7 years of exp) in April 2020. The pay was normalised at 15.5LPA. Will get the package revised next month to 16.25 LPA. Now Deloitte has approached, so can I ask for 30%pay hike considering the switch will happen after completing almost 11-12 months in my current organization or can I ask for more than 30%, depending if I get a senior consultant or manager role? Also will the switch within a year have any negative impact?

Note- I don't want to tell anyone. Since it may backfire sometimes

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

How to leverage personal connections for personal gain?

Looking for tips on short term and long term strategy.

This job is a lot better if you don't care about the bonus and hours requirement. I can pretty easily bill 1700 hours annually and my firm so far hasn't cared in the slightest. Worrying about hitting 2000 hours for the bonus used stress me out so much, and I just don't think it's worth it. Base salaries are ridiculous and way more than enough to finance my lifestyle.

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
