Not personally a huge fan of fan of those classes, but reading, awareness of best practices and your internal systems are key. You can’t do it alone and shouldn’t try. You need buy-in early and often. You also have to switch your mindset and what you think of as the value you bring away from output / deliverables. That’s your team’s job and caused a bit of an identity crisis for me.
Your job is to lead, set strategy, remove obstacles. Hold firm where it makes sense to hold firm. No one wants to follow a leader who can set a direction. Priorities will change and that can be ok, but you need to handle it correctly. You’ll know already But folks invest invest a lot of time and energy into their designs, code, etc. asking them to drop X and pick-up Y should be done very judiciously.
I think the courses can be handy if that type of learning fits your learning style.
I personally learn more by reading, so for me books are more useful than courses.
One of the best learning tools I can recommend is mentorship. As others have said, the way you count the value you provide changes dramatically when you move from technical IC into product management. Having a mentor who has made that switch ahead of you can really help you recalibrate.
Yes, some of it you’ll only learn through experience. Having a great mentor can jumpstart that learning and help you avoid the more egregious mistakes that are common in new managers.
