Keep the flexibility. The stress is not worth the money. And depending on how old your kids are you may just be spending the extra money on childcare anyway.
That’s exactly what would happen.
I stayed for the flexibility, for sure. Never got the raise or promo I’d been promised…which sucked. But I can and went as I pleased, wfh for a month in summer (before this was a thing), and it was the best choice for me.
I think you have to weigh your options. I am in a similar situation and enjoy the time with my kids. With WFM, I am able to pop down and see them 3-4 times a day in between school and activities.
I am really enjoying all the time with my kids as they are young and would have not had this in my past role.
At this moment you couldn’t pay me $50k more for a commute. This is coming from an ambitious money-loving mama whose household finances are feeling super tight with all the childcare we pay.
I’m literally in the same exact situation and have the same question. Also concerned that work is so flexible right now bc there is a pending layoff so that may force me to take new job regardless. Following!
I’m leaving for less money and less stress. Gaining more flexibility, more chill environment, and a better mission.
Update: new employer pays for health insurance (for the whole family!) and a pension. So when the math works out, it’s only $1k less per year. Corporate work junkies are lied to. Benefits + a paycheck + humanity are possible.
