Moms that went from biglaw to something else (mid law, in house, government work) where did you go and how was it? Seriously thinking about making a move. Thanks.

I went from biglaw to midlaw and it sucked. Same hours, less pay, and less interesting work. Went back to my prior BL firm and the partner I worked closest with there helped me get a reduced hours arrangement and permanent WFH as part of my return offer. I may try to go in house or career clerk in the future, but the reduced hours requirement has been a game changer

Went in house after seven years in biglaw. For me, having my nights and weekends free and being able to actually take vacations without working through them has been a game changer and makes the pay cut worth it.

Went from Biglaw to in house for better hours. Totally worth the pay cut.

I left and worked freelance when my kids were young. It was awesome for that stage of life. Now I am at a smallish firm. WLB and people are really great but there are definitely trade offs. I will say that, at the time I left BL, I could not imagine that it could actually be possible to have a legal job that was anything less than all-consuming, and assumed if I left to something smaller or even in house that I’d end up in the same scenario as A2 (same hours, less pay). Hence the move to freelance. I can now definitively say that there are firms that have actual WLB, but yes, you will most likely take a hit on comp and the sophistication of the work. Another consideration is how senior you are, because the training I’ve seen at small firms is not comparable to what you get in big law. If you’ve already got a pretty well developed skill set, then it can be a great move and you’ll be amazed at what it feels like to have your life back. It’s worth doing poking around to see what’s out there.

Contemplating the same.

I’ve worked in both. It completely depends on the team and how you’re positioned. I would focus more on the position/team/need you’re going to fill vs. the firm. If the team needs a work horse, you’re not going to get work life balance. If they need a more senior person to manage client relationships and already have a team of good associates, you may.

Hi Fishes,

Need some help figuring out where I stand in the job market and what profiles should I apply for. Here are some of the roles I play in the team:
1. Business intelligence lead: Plan and implement BI solutions for various banking, healthcare and utilities clients. Across various platforms like Qlik, Cognos, OBIEE, etc.
2. Work on deliverables when the team isn't available, and this happens more often than not because we have a small team.
3. ML deliverables: Plan and (continued)

Very very poor hikes, even worse than service companies. For ppl who joined in November or later, , they have defaulted hikes to bare minimum.

Extremely disappointed.
