I went PT from home 11 years ago and stayed a Senior for all those years. I had 4 children, my youngest is now three. Never will I ever regret it. Time with them is so precious. And I was able to move to manager FT this year, and am making $181k. I do prefer working PT rather than a resume gap. But a gap is still better then regretting not spending enough time with them. Have you considered Part Time?
Main thing is you need a boss who respects boundaries. I was in industry, so it was better than PA. And I was hourly so if I did work more than 20, I got paid extra.
I wished I had more time to spend with my kids; I only had the normal maternity leave and had to return to work due to our finances.
No job is worth more than spending time with your little ones, they grow so fast!
I’m really happy for you that you had that time to enjoy your family ☺️
My advice, as the grow, please make sure to attend any school activities where they participate (ie, some have choir for Christmas time); I did not attend the last one my son had (COVID came along), due to meetings at work (and I ended up being laid-off years later); this was my biggest regret 😢
Don’t give up your purpose. If you like your job, keep it and find a way to make it all work. Also realize that for the first few years the kids don’t remember anything. You remember those times though, so you have to decide if it’s worth it to scale back for yourself. The kids won’t care until they are older.
This is false. Spending time apart is unlikely to cause long-term detachment issues; it can trigger normal separation anxiety, a sign of healthy attachment, which typically occurs around 8-9 months of age. Crying and clinginess are normal responses to a caregiver’s absence, and unless the separation is severe (usually 60+ hours a week), there is no increased risk for disorganized attachment.
I took time off to be with my children. I worked part time for a year after I had my son and hated it. After they were 1 and 3, I returned to work doing seasonal tax work. I was a senior auditor at PwC before kids but started over as a 28 year old intern at BDO 💁♀️ I did that for 3 years and then started year round part time at 60%. At some point I increased to 80%. Don’t regret it at all. Now I’m a tax senior manager at Deloitte.
I am taking a pay cut now to spend more time with my two high school kids. One has one year left in high school. These years with kiddos will not be back and work ALWAYS will be there.
I also entered the field of accounting in my late 30th. While I am way below in the seniority comparing to the same age group, I am doing just fine.
