30% of gross monthly income is the rule of thumb, lower that if you want more disposable income. Should add many people in nyc go over this because apartments are so expensive
Well 30% is the rule of the thumb but honestly at your salary range, I would go for 20%. You won’t save more money if expenses increase proportionately to income. So that’s $3000 from you plus $2000 from your SO. You can find lots of decent 1 to 2 bedroom at $5000 range
You can afford up to over $5500 but no reason to do that if you care about saving money. Cap it somewhere between $3500-$3800. Use StreetEasy site/app to look for places.

Don’t spend more than 3,500. Anything above and you’re getting a rip off. Also be weary of not having a credit score. Don’t let brokers take advantage.
