Have a discussion with your boss. Let them know you have been acting manager for a while now. Find out if they have an estimated date of return for the other person. If they do not , let them know , you appreciate their confidence in you, you are a team player but if you are going to continue in this role you need to be compensated for it. If they don't want to compensate you for it you have a choice to make. Either step down from the management role and go back to your normal role or keep on going the way you are. I personally would step down , you have experience under your belt now, look for another job where you are valued for your hard work.
Now
Tbh you’re being taken advantage of. I wouldn’t say this is time to quit but I can almost guarantee they’re gonna hire someone to take that position and you’ll be training them. Been there and it feels crappy. I would say for next time negotiate pay like immediately! I’ve always worked in places where ppl quit and anyone who isn’t management does not know until a birdy lets it slip! Sometimes I would know only because I was close to that particular coworker. Best wishes to you honestly and don’t forget your worth. I really hope things workout in your favor but always be prepared for the next move.
Ask now when you have leverage
You push back immediately. Your plate was full with your responsibilities that you were hired for, now you have someone else’s with no talk of increase. This is how they get you. Set up a meeting with the manager/or the person above who used to be your manager and then HR, if they don’t take it that way themselves. You have to advocate for yourself regardless of the type of job market, you’re not a doormat.
Ask NOW.
Could it be that the person is on medical leave like cancer? They might not be able to tell you.
Maybe, maybe they don’t have it. I guess it depends on the size of the company.
Document all the extra work, monitor job boards for the company to post the position, but also for similar positions. You need to make sure that your salary ask is within market range. It goes without saying though to update your resume and apply to some of those jobs that you're noticing a great salary for. Heck, maybe you'll be noticed elsewhere.
Say this to whoever you report to: “Thanks for the promotion 2.5 months ago. It’s an honor, but I noticed my pay increase hasn’t been applied to any of my paychecks since then. Should I call HR directly about this?”

Tread lightly. This job market is a terrible time to be looking for work.
Politely ask your leadership chain to consider a promotion or wage increase, but be prepared for the answer to be “no.” Just be respectful and you should be fine.
If you were in a Union, you'd have a right to be paid immediately for being tasked with "higher level duties." You may also be entitled to that under various state laws, but only if you're in a worker friendly state. You'll need to research and ask. Good luck.
Move to your bosses old office and change your email signature with their title.
You're kidding, right?
Now! I wouldnt do it another day without them paying you their salary. Plus I would tell them, that now that I have their experience, I want whichever position that pays the most. I don't know why these companies think they can get by with things of that sort. If they don't agree to do what you want, I would put a month notice in. Keep us posted.
I was in a similar spot in my previous role, however my two leaders did come back after parental leave. Once they did I asked if I could have a title/salary raise. They said no, so I left. Coincidentally, when I found my current job my previous employer came back with a counter of what I had asked for the 2 months prior. shocker right?
All of this to say, I would ask, and if they say no, you find something new.
Simple stop doing the job you don’t have(if they say anything tell them while performing the duties of your boss you instructed yourself as the employee in your original position to focus on your own job duties, and and let it play out, or start looking for a new job. Or just continue with the norm and hope the company will do the right thing, or that your boss is actually coming back…
I went through this. And I hurt myself while covering and doing all the administrative tasks. Still out waiting for surgery and involved in mental health treatment for burn out. Run. Fast.

Wait another 2.5 months. Just kidding. Definitely ask now.
NOW!!
Research to determine your worth based on the duties you're completing. Schedule a meeting to discuss and make sure you're prepared to answer a ton of questions.
