My boss said they want to promote me but they’re having issues with their bosses. They won’t budge on the request. How do I negotiate? My plan was to find a job outside of the company. But it’s taking so long for other companies to respond. Has anything worked for you?

Keep looking and don't bother pushing it at your current employer. You will be happier elsewhere. Don't settle obviously but if you are looking for an increase in salary, the best bumps will be when you're an external candidate

Yeah. I’ve applied to at least 50 jobs since November 2025. It’s been difficult getting an interview! Hope soon. Thanks for your input.

It sounds like they are making excuses and playing games. I would just encourage you to keep applying as much as you can, but it seems like all jobs are stagnant right now, hiring is really slow. But at least you can put out your résumé and hope for the best.

like

You’re right. I appreciate it.

Are they not wanting to promote you because of your performance or because there isn’t a job opening at that next level? For the same reason you can’t have 100 CFOs is the same reason that if there are already 5 people at the position above you there may not be a business reason for a 6th. And if that’s the reason unless the company grows or someone above you leaves you will never get promoted.

My boss says my performance is good and she never has to worry about me. But I think they want me to just do more to make it look good on paper for HR. I believe you’re right about being stagnant at this position because I don’t see them expanding this team. Thank you.

Do you believe them or does it sound like an excuse to you?

like

I believe that my boss wants me to get promoted. But I know she’s limited. She’s got a lot of connections and is willing to help me move to a position I’d like though. We’ll have to see.

Well, first and foremost keep looking for jobs outside the company. Because even if they do finally approve your promotion, I don’t think you’ll have a lot of wiggle room to negotiate the salary. They’re dragging their feet and don’t seem to care whether or not you get promoted so they’re not going to want to give you a substantial raise.

like

You’re right. I’ll keep applying. Also, I always thought it’d be cool to be an engineer but i think only smart people do that. Haha

I feel like I’m in a similar boat. Honestly I’m not checking out, but I’m not going to kill myself at work anymore. It’s a boundary I’m setting

Exactly! Thats how I feel. I used to stay late, make my kids wait for me to finish work before spending time with them. But nope, not anymore.

Started at a big firm in July with high hopes- in the career path I wanted and I would be joining with other new grads.
After onboarding, it’s as if my team forgets about us every day. The training is non existent, there doesn’t seem to be any initiative to invest in new hires, my manager scolds me for not knowing enough yet gives no direction. I don’t want to waste time (colleagues mentioned it doesn’t get much better from here). Do I embrace the suck or look for other opportunities?

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
