My boss says to ask questions, but then acts annoyed or ignores me for days when I do. I've been here about a year and a half. It’s making me wonder if I can even grow in this role. How have others dealt with a manager like this?

There are a few things you could try. It does depend a lot on the manager whether it’ll work or not. I will frame questions as an A or B answer, which one is better? Also, figure out how they want to receive those questions: email, a 1:1, etc.

I wish I could come up with a question that would get my boss to ignore me for days, that would be spectacular. Seriously, your boss sounds like an oddball. If he is blocking you from doing well in the role, get serious about finding something else. If someone acts weird they're not going to change, it's not like the not-weird version of them will show up eventually.

Good luck with yours

Isn't it amazing that these bosses get promoted?

They are called egotistical "toxic" bimbos.

Unfortunately, you can't change them. And when layoff time comes, they will be protected while the good people get the axe.

I recommend kissing his ass as much as possible to feed his ego while looking for another job. But remember that the grass is not always greener somewhere else. However, if you get a raise to go somewhere else, that offsets the BS you have to deal with.

People should be paid more money to deal with bad bosses. Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in.

How do I get a job as a Mechanical Engineer if I dont have experience?

I couldn’t get an internship while in school. I have a BS in ME and projects from school under my belt. I’ve also passed the FE exam. I’ve been mostly just doing CAD for a company for the last year by creating minimally dimensioned drawings and moving parts around in assemblies. I want to evolve in my career and be doing more. I worked so hard to earn my degree and I feel like I’m not even using it. But who will hire me?
