There's a pretty good chance the decisions have been made and nothing you do going forward will affect that. But, you never know. Just for personal satisfaction you might as well finish strong. And, if there's any chance it can do any good, you will have done yourself some good and you won't be finishing at all.
True! I was laid off 6 months after getting the best review in my career. Large companies do not care an iota about the work you've contributed. They will throw you to the curb like a bag of trash at any moment without regard. It's unfortunately the standard these days.
Just start job searching now.
Even surviving layoffs isn’t great. I worked for a big old tech company when their endless layoffs started. Even after the layoff, the best people often left on their own. Then you ended up doing the work of several people while training people who won’t really replace the people who left for a year or more. It can turn into a death spiral. People are laid off, your work increases. The best people leave because they can. Your work increases more. You have to train the new people, your work increases even more. Now the average people leave the even increasing work. Your work increases again. Forget it.
Your fate has been decided for weeks now

Work as hard as you can where you are at, and apply as hard as you can in your off time. Cover your bases.

The post layoff atmosphere is not great. Morale and trust will reach an all time low. There is rarely just one cut. The people who they cut and keep may be shocking to the senses.
Get yourself an employment lawyer and get a plan in place.
What is the purpose of an employment lawyer?
Lay offs are easy to predict. Look at your salary. Now look to your right and left. If you are paid more then those people consider yourself canned. I worked for sprint as it transitioned into embarq and twc as it transitioned to spectrum. I seen hundreds of lay offs. Why do they call it that? It's getting fired.
The new term for it is "strategic realignment". Still sucks the same.
CV, job search, down tools asap. It's all about you now. If you feel it in your gut, you're probably right. Good luck brother
Yeah stop contributing, stop doing work for them, dont facilliate any under the radar handovers.
Anyone who is employed and feels secure in their job should always be looking for something else in my opinion. The job market and these corporations are volatile and the economy is going to crash heavily. So always have a back up plan. I know highly qualified people who have been out of a job for 2 years with no luck since being laid off. Please understand how incredibly stupid and insane the job market has been for years now.
Agree 100%! My whole team was laid off about a year and a half ago. We've all kept in touch and none of us have been able to find jobs in this market, despite having excellent experience and references. I've never seen a job market this bad.
Hope for the best and plan for the worst. Invest your energy in job hunting. If you have any leftover energy then you can invest in “busting it out”.
My company announced layoffs but those people were already informed. My department wasn’t impacted but I am still applying for new roles to be on the safe side. But the market is crazy for everyone! Those who are employed or laid off! You just never know in this climate. You have to do what’s best for you because the company is going to do what’s best for itself.
I totally get the anxiety around this! While it’s tough to predict, putting in extra effort could help you stand out, especially if you show initiative and value. It’s always good to do your best, but try to keep an eye on the bigger picture and look for opportunities elsewhere just in case.
Nah don't bust it out now, it's already been decided who's being cut, most of the time layoffs have absolutely nothing to do with job performance, it's about financial cut backs. Start looking now just in case!!
It sounds like you want to stay. Is that correct? After "surviving" several rounds of layoffs, I had to lay myself off through some discussion with my boss. Like others have said, most likely the decisions have been made. I'd recommend you do a fair amount of work for a day's pay, but don't t bust your butt, and see what happens. Sometimes leaving a job and moving on is a good thing. I stayed at a company 24 years, until I hated my job, but felt stuck. Don't let that happen to you. Best wishes to you.
Chill. If they don't like you, you're out. He who works and does his best goes down the road with all the rest. He that skives and f's about, gets to see the job right out.
Read “Who moved my Cheese”. Companies are bought and sold, downsized, right sized and made more efficient. Always update your resume every year! Have at least three people you have worked with to provide you a referral. Working in Quality Engineering has taught me that Quality is the first to go. For example, Boeing’s Quality Manager who was let go because he was complaining of quality issues in cargo doors not being installed properly then a door falling off their Boeing 777 max after his being let go a year previous to the incident.
The decision has either already been made, or your boss has been told to remove x amount of people from his team. Unfortunately, you have no idea which. If you aren't a top performer it's best to just start looking.
Top performers aren't necessarily kept -- sometimes they'll shuffle the criteria so the highest comp'ed people with the better benefits are let go.
The layoff list or decision has been in the works for months. In the meantime, update your LinkedIn profile and resume. You should update your LinkedIn/Resume whether you are affected by the layoff. Also, I get all files from the internal apps, i.e., past development plans, project milestones, achievements, and education. All this will help you build your resume and stories for interviews. Good luck.
This.
Why weren’t you busting it out in the first place? Maybe, You should do a deeper evaluation of yourself.
because its not rewarded to bust it out. you will just get more work
Lesson learned from hindsight: ALWAYS BE NETWORKING. You never know when layoffs will occur, a product is discontinued, spun off, etc. Take your favorite ex-workers for coffee, check in on the best boss you ever had, go to a conference and visit booths of companies you admire, etc.
Also make leaders above your boss know your work and who you are. Most layoffs are group decisions and the more leaders who know you, the less likely you are to get cut. And you'll get better assignments.
