Is he on medication? Is something going on at home? Maybe he’s having trouble adjusting to Middle School? Hormones? I’ve been SPED teacher 16+ years. One thing I’ve learned — all behavior is communication. It’s like playing detective to get to the bottom of the misbehavior. Best wishes! 🌹
Absolutely sounds like that student is in need of some guidance on desolation tools.
Crying out for help!
He needs to spend a whole day with you doing his work and also building a relationship with you. It will be like a day of ISS. It might take a couple days. Have some of the day spent with the para one on one too. Be tough but loving. I usually have the rule that if they are working they can sit anywhere in the room and we will visit and work together but if he is refusing to work or being disrespectful, then there is a study karrol he has to work at or just sit. His choice but the work will get done. If it's a really tough day then to say you get this done and we will take a break and play a game, but some work has to get done before we can have fun.
Definitely sounds like something I would do! I can be firm but loving.
Am in south east Pa and this sounds very familiar !
Many believe that the sudden change is related to the environment (change from ES to MS, or MS to HS, and in addition, remote the previous year).
One of our HS paras received a broken nose when a non-verbal student with Autism head butted her several times. They were restraining hands and arms because the student previously tried to strike her and 2 other educators. This is the first year at HS, remote the previous year, and no previous behaviors to this extreme.
I would check out the medical first. Is something going on with his seizures etc...?
I’ve asked parents, we’ll see what happens.
what is Doose syndrome not familiar?
Doose syndrome is a type of epilepsy -- myoclonic atonic epilepsy (MAE). Somewhat rare and no known cause.
Sounds like you need another IEP with the full team and possible revision of his BIP. Is there a behaviorist involved?
If you look up Doose Syndrome, there is a chance of severe ADHD, ADD, and Autism. The student, if untreated for any of these, can have excessive behavioral problems. It could be a possibility that he needs further testing.
