No. The help is only for people that have outstanding balances. If you already took care of the Pell grant in your undergrad then you don’t really need help.. That being said, you can get 10k off your grad loans only if you meet the income requirement
This doesn’t answer OP’s question. Pell grants are not loans with balances - they’re grants for individuals who meet certain income thresholds and qualify for assistance during undergrad. So far, from what Biden and the White House have said is that you would qualify for the additional $10k “if you received a Pell Grant.” This is the administration’s attempt at targeting additional relief at those who come from lower income families, i.e., individuals who have qualified for a Pell Grant. Unclear at this point whether this additional relief will apply to grad loans, since Pell Grants are given during undergrad, but nothing so far suggests the additional relief will not be applied to grad loans. Students from low income families may have paid off or have low undergrad loan balances and now have grad loan balances, and it seems like the administration is trying to target this extra relief to such individuals.
The answer is yes. The existence of a pell grant in your history is all they're looking for as a qualifier for the additional forgiveness. This even includes outstanding balances on parent plus loans taken out for your kids so it will also extend to grad school loans as well.
I would love to know this as well!
