It’s all about optics. They’d rather impress outsiders than invest in the people actually keeping the place running. I've worked in many companies that operated like this and it's so frustrating. Unfortunately, I don't think this is something you can change from the bottom. Only the people at the top control these priorities.
It is unfortunate :( you are right nothing I can do haha
It is really frustrating when it seems like they are prioritizing ego and reputation over people and resources. However, sometimes it's not as easy as just canceling a conference. There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to conferences, and they aren't so easy to just back out of. But I agree, it is frustrating.
That makes sense. It feels tone deaf but I guess I get the timing isn’t always controllable
It’s a fair question. I don't get it as well. However, I do know that conferences can be powerful when they foster connection and innovation, but timing matters. I remember my org throwing a huge event right after layoffs, it crushed morale. If you go, maybe focus on the people. Sometimes one real conversation can spark change or opportunity later on.
Great idea!! Thanks for the advice
It's all about generating "visibility" and "awareness" for the company. They sponsor the big tech conference, get mentioned in some writeups after the fact, and hope that leads to a windfall of new customers. If the company was humming along smoothly, it could be a great investment. As described, it seems frivolous.
It seems frivolous to me! But we will see what the results are I guess?

I worked in event marketing for years. A successful turnout can be a revenue source to support other initiatives, such as selling data. Your sales team will gain new follow up contacts. It’s hard to close sales in a conference. It also helps your business to be seen as a thought leader, which could also help with new business.
