My manager keeps scheduling “quick calls” at 5pm that somehow last an hour. How do I politely push back on after hours work without looking uncooperative? They're the type of person that's hard to get off the phone even after the answer has been found...

Good one!

Per QCC, make sure you are counting the overtime. Otherwise: “I’m sorry, I have a hard stop at 5. I can do 4 pm today or 9:30 am tomorrow.”

like

Thanks that's a good way to set a clear deadline!

Is the call work? Is it after work hours? If so, tell them you require Overtime pay for such things! 1 Minute past work hours = 1 hour overtime. 1 Hour and 1 minute past = 2 Hours.

Etc.

They only rent you - they do not own you!

like

Yes work related but just seems to always land at the end of the day

Try responding with, “hey I’d love to but our chats tend to be quick and I have somewhere I need to be in 30. I’ll call you first thing tomorrow!”

Then sign off. Do not wait for a response.

Alternatively, sign off immediately and say sorry the next day that you missed it.

Either way, they know they’re keeping you and don’t care. Don’t let it continue.

Prepare for negative feedback about it later. Don’t take the guilt bait. They’re taking advantage and they know it!

Like others said, establish a hard stop

I am a Reliability Maintenance 3P contractor for Amazon. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering on June 2022. I’ve been working with Amazon for a year, but there’s a lack of prospective EE positions within the company. The job postings I see are either less or barely above my current salary. I’m not sure if staying longer is beneficial for my future career as an Electrical engineer. I plan on getting my FE license within the next 6 months. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Looking for respectful ways to manage helping people in need of a job or seeking mentorship. I get 3-4 requests a week from mutual contacts asking if I can connect with a former colleague (always broad). Typically the ask is a 30-45 min call. I’ve been laid off, I know how hard a time it is, but equally am working long hours, parenting and want to reserve time for those I know. How do others manage these extra calls into their weeks?

Hi Everyone, I am trying to apply for a Technical Support role at Dropbox I’m entering all the required fields but there seems to be an issue, when I hit submit after filling the form, it doesn’t submit and throws error ‘Looks like you left this blank! Please fill out this required field’ when all the fields are entered already (I have checked so many times, and filled the form from scratch several times too). Anyone from Dropbox who can put me in touch with HR or suggest what I should do next?

I have an offer to do some consulting for a company based out of the UK (I am in the US). The job would not go through a consulting company but would be directly with the company. I have not done any consulting before so I am not sure how it works, what I would need to set up (they mentioned that I would start a LLC and bill them directly, no idea how to do that), how to determine the tax implications of this, or what hourly rate I would expect. Can anyone offer advice?

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?
