My manager keeps telling me “a promotion is coming soon,” but that’s been the phrase for a year now. I’m starting to feel like they’re stalling. How do you turn vague promises into a real timeline?

I totally knew that feeling! Was introduced to everyone that Im the team lead since 3-4yrs ago. The title was invisible and had been doing more than a lead role. Few lunch talks with colleagues made me decided to earn that title. Was told need to monitor my performance for 1 yr because ive no experience in "leading" when ive proven myself since day 1. 2nd yr came and this need to be discussed with mgmt. Finally 3rd yr, it was "approved" but had to wait till next annual review and then was told, "lets do it in June so u will feel there is indeed a promotion with revised salary". Came company restructuring, where the opportunity was open to the floor "raise your hand if you want to be Team Lead". Everyone knew it will auto go to me.. but oh well... it was given to 1 of the junior because 1 of the ceo "feel" she is more deserving and have the "capability". That's when I realised, its time to go. Restructuring was chaos, biased and poorly managed. The mgr whom I worked and supported more than anything else for 6yrs - didn't fight for me. I left, and then others left too 1 by 1 especially the most senior BSO. Not because I started the ball rolling but those left/leaving can see poor decision making/planning by mgmt. I left without a job and taking a break now and hopefully will land myself on a table where I will be valued by another true leader.

Keep waiting or leave I guess! I’m curious to know why they keep promising you false hope however.

My manager kept doing this as well. I finally realized there was no promotion coming. They were just empty promises and lies. They were danging the carrot to keep me working hard.

It sounds like gaslighting and stick dangling 101 to me. He may not have any intentions of giving you a promotion anytime soon. All you can do is keep bringing it up while looking for a job in the background. Good luck to you.

Any advice for asking for almost a 30-35% raise. I recently got an Office Manager position and I wanted to renegotiate my pay. It's a brand new location with branches nationwide. So for a few months I had to do everything myself since I was the only one in the office at this location. I did extremely well and everyone's told me I've been doing a great job. The company has been telling me I'm going to change and get different responsibilities over time.

I’ve built a reputation I’m proud of @ my company. I’m underpaid for what I do (started as an intern) & recently asked for a market adjustment. Management acknowledged that I’m undervalued & plans to set me up for a promotion. It’d come with more responsibility, which doesn’t align with my goals.

Is it wise for me to remain open to a promotion just for increased pay? Or should I be transparent with management about my goals (& possibly not get the pay I’m asking for)? Or any other tips?

We currently cover ee portion and she pays for 100% of dependent cost. Is it reasonable to ask her to write check back to firm for her portion of dependent premiums? Assume she is taking full 4 mos off.
