My New Year’s resolution is getting a lawyer job (ideally tech focused) at Google. How hard is it and what will it take? I’m 7 year at a v50 with privacy exp.

There are, and will be, a handful of product counsel roles coming up.
(1) Network and get a referral; we get lots of applications, you need to stand out.
(2) make sure your resume meets ALL of the requirements of the role; if not, you’ll be screened out early
(3) very likely that the open roles won’t be for Bay Area or NY, it’s basically non negotiable. but secondary cities like DC, Boston, Chicago, Seattle… if the job posting lists one of those cities and you’re in another similar city, apply anyway

like

Obviously just apply. But, if you can network (firm alums; law school alums…), all the better. If you’re looking to go in-house, you should be working your network extensively.

Is privacy your primary practice area? It’s not easy for anyone, but those people seem to have a better time transitioning right into positions at Google. Anecdotally I know several

like

You should get a referral from someone there if you happen to know anyone. Will help get your foot in the door for an interview.

Also note they've been hiring legal more in lower cost of living cities. From what I've heard it's much harder to get a legal job there in NY or Bay Area.

“a lawyer job at google” are you sure you are even in biglaw or an attorney to begin with

likefunny

read the bowl you are in. its standard to say to go in house at Google or to work as a privacy counsel at google

Good luck (Taken voice)

like

Ha! You and me both (really). 😂

My impression is that it’s very hard, good opportunities are rare, and contacts are important.

That said, it happens every day.

Best of luck!

Yes, my background is also 7 years of privacy law. ☺️

I hope you’re correct.

My resolution was to date a model

Im working at a big multi-product company and we're having 5 dedicated product teams, however, teams are working in silos. Each team's has its own process, design system, technology etc. We identified that most of the teams use and need components that were already conceptualised, designed and developed, for our other products, and we are starting to create a global set of components, a global design system that we will use on all our products. What is your approach?

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
