My partner often assumes I'm free to help with errands or household tasks whenever she needs, disrupting my workflow. How have you successfully gotten your family (especially partners) to understand that working from home means sticking to a work schedule, just like any other job? I'm struggling with this and need some advice!

Did you try any of these?

1.) I wear the pants in the family and I’m super busy, why don’t you go knit something?

2.) I bring home the bacon, you cook it.

3.) Yes, I know I play Call of Duty on my breaks but that’s different, I need that so I can perform better at work. Running errands for you just makes me dumber.

Let me know if these work 👍

Isn’t being able to help your partner like…one of the main benefits of WFH?!

I get your concern, my husband works from home and I have two little ones so it’s very tempting to ask for his help when I see him but we had this talk early on. Just be respectful about it and set boundaries. I never ask him to get me anything outside the house unless he’s already at the grocery store getting coffee for himself, and then he’ll just ask if I need anything. that way I don’t feel like I’m a burden and it’s something I’m grateful for. If it’s house chores, unless it’s something like loading or unloading the laundry while they’re already next to it, or taking out the trash these are things that my husband will just do without me, so you can do things like that since they’re quick. But there’s no need to do major house chores during the day. just have that talk about the boundaries (don’t use the word boundaries ha) but if you can help around without her asking, she’ll already see how helpful you are and then she probably won’t ask you to do any other errands until you’re done with work.

I had to have a pretty honest convo with my spouse to let him know that basically, if I keep getting pulled away, I either work late or lose income. Framing it in terms of the impact on both of us helped.

I work from home. Spouse gets it. But I do block out my calendar from meetings if I have to pick up the kids from school. I’ve taken video calls from my car when needed. The agency understands. It’s a balance.

I work from home and my husband just walks in on me and drives me crazy. I close the office door when I need him to stay away and it works 80% of the time. I really hate the mindset that when you work from home, you are free whenever!

It's time for a serious talk with your partner.

My tween constantly tries to get me to put the computer down and buy her something from Starbucks. It's annoying, but her brain isn't fully formed and she's pretty sure the most important thing in my life is buying her a Frappuccino. An actual adult should never be messing with your ability to get work done.

Struggled with the exact same thing. My ADHD coach suggested putting something (a hat?) on the home office door handle to signify do-not-disturb. Sorta how people would to signify the bone zone back in college. It’s still an artificial obstruction though.

I ended up getting a coworking space for $160/month. Money well spent! And I’d go to Starbucks before I started that which worked for me. There’s really no matching “outa sight outa mind”

I have a specific baseball cap. 🧢 when the cap is on, no interruptions are welcome. My wife is an artist and her studio is built off the kitchen. I have a studio which is freestanding across our back yard. But I like to work in the kitchen where the coffee and the dog are.

My partner has never assumed I’m available just because I’m working from home.

But they HAVE assumed I’m available because I’m freelance, especially if I’m not on a super intense job and constantly b***ing.

And in that situation, they would be…..often right.

To all the people searching PGs, i would suggest not to go with any online bookings like nestaway, zolostays.

The ideal thing is to land in hyderabad, book a hotel for two days and then go to office nearby area and search for PGs, you will get 100+ pgs in each location. Have a look at the room size, ventilation , bed size , if required taste the food also before booking PG. In case you need flat then also you will see " To let " boards everywhere, just call the number
