I would still compensate her. I know I would be upset if my employer forced me to basically go on unpaid leave for four weeks.
Depends how much you want to keep the nanny too. Forced leave for 4 weeks without an ability to find work would be a nail in the coffin for some. What does your contract state?
Pay her — do you want the person who cares for your kids to worry about paying bills/feeding herself? Consider your nanny’s salary a fixed expense for 52 weeks/year and just budget accordingly. Have a contract that lays out expectations so you can both plan accordingly.
Yes.
I would pay her, as none of us would appreciate a boss leaving town for a month and not paying us, especially if there’s an expectation she wait around so she’s available again in January when you return.
We have a clause in our contract that if we give two weeks notice minimum, it’s no pay. So depends also on what your contract says.
Man I just remember how much missing even one day of pay was when I was a nanny. I already didn’t have benefits like insurance and retirement and then to miss a day of pay on top of it just sucked.
If she hasn’t started yet and you don’t have PTO/your vacation/her sick leave nailed down in a contract, DO IT NOW. This is the type of stuff you are open about before someone starts to make sure everyone is in agreement.
For me, we have 2 weeks of PTO that our nanny selects and 2 weeks of our vacation that she is paid to have off every year. It works out to 1 week summer vacation and the week between Christmas and new years as her two weeks off that we are off, and then she picks her own time. Either way, she is paid. Beyond that, she would not be paid if she requested it, and I have written into her contract that she is guaranteed 35 hours a week.
Ok
