Small and steady. There's nothing wrong with lofty goals, but if you're angling for a big change, give it a chance at being successful by breaking it into manageable pieces. Don't start with "I need a new job by March." Start with "I want to have my resume overhauled by January 15th. Then next goal is "Submit 20 applications a week, every week, until I have 4 interviews lined up."

Big goal, but then smaller supporting goals leading to it. Break it down for yourself, and you’ll also get the feeling of accomplishment throughout.
