What if the private equity boom of the past year and a half led to an underestimated amount of unsubstantiated investment/leveraged financings that, into the next couple years, will lead to a mass number of defaults similar to the subprime mortgage crisis?

Are you suggesting PE could make bad investments based on little real diligence? No way…. In other news, water is wet.

funnylike

Like how much diligence do investment banks even do on the finance side ? How much do attorneys even do when there are 4 deals going that all want to close in like 3 weeks ?

likefunny

Firms should REALLY make corporate folks work on at least a couple lawsuits stemming from the type of transactions they work on

The short answer is that due to capital requirements on banks decreasing their exposure to bad investments and the advent of private lenders who arent systematically important, a rush of defaults in the LBO space probably would minimally impact the broader economy. Sorry if that's a downer for folks' guilt fantasies.

What do you mean "unsubstantiated"? The companies are frauds? The valuations were frothy?

Most PE backed businesses were businesses before the PE firm invested. It's unlikely they're frauds. Also, PE lending isn't as systemic an issue as the RMBS crisis.

Please do not violate privilege on this platform 🤣😅🤣

Luckily I’m not in private equity haha

I'm 26, I studied economics but I don't know why I'm not much into investing/trading. Someone else like this?
I recognize this is not a very good approach for someone with money "knowledge" and I would like to change this mindset. My main weakness is that I easily get bored of following the market and that I do not see big opportunities. Any advice?
Where to start learning, general advice for LT and ST investments, things you learnt, books that changed your pov on the topic etc.

Thx!

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.
