We are constantly talking to each other but the people that need to hear how we feel are never there (meaning the white people). What’s the point? We know how each other feels. I also have noticed that they’ve started playing Fox News in the office. I’m so over this shit.
I saw a white girl crying about it on Friday. Invite everyone. Say it’s for the black community of the firm AND ALLIES. This isn’t hard.
I made it and it wasn’t for only black people, in the room it was mostly partners and I was the only senior staff and there was one black partner in the room they really care and want to make a statement. They say Tim Ryan is serious about this and wants to prove the firm is truly inclusive and about diversity
I understand where you’re coming from. Most of the time it’s the firms “promoting” their inclusive workplace in order to stay on top of the list of places people want to work at. Sometimes though, maybe not in this situation, they actually do care. If you think about it that way, it’s a little easier to cope with. But at the end of the day it’s still a (white) boys club
I'd assume that everyone wouldn't show up because some don't have anything to say . The only commonality here is that the guy was black, and the people invited was black. Not much more. I'd rather they overshoot and throw everyone in the situation, than undershoot and specifically target that of all things.
Include everyone, invite everyone. Ask the question, if Botham had been white, would only white people receive invitations to the same thing? I highly doubt it.
We’re only black people invited to discuss? That seems to defeat part of the purpose in my mind, but at the same time I see a lot of the same white people attending these types of things in my office when some others really need to listen...
I bet that one was good considering what happened there
Are yo guys going to the meetings?
I didn’t go today (would be interested to hear from someone that attended), but the invite was specifically for black people if I remember correctly.
I went to the Charlotte one it was about 60/40
What would you propose to be a better solution?
@associate accountant 1 do you think people will feel comfortable speaking in front of everyone? I’ve heard of not feeling in a safe space so trying to understand what a good happy medium could be since we know everyone won’t be pleased no matter what is done.
I couldn’t make it either but I did hear Brendan Dougher was in attendance not sure about other non diverse individuals
I think this round of “conversations” had a higher turn out of non-black people because it was triggered by something that happened to someone at the firm. When they did them the last time and the trigger was Philando Castille and the protests in Dallas I only saw one white person at a meeting of almost 50 people. I’m in the NYM market, for context.
I think it’s just the sad reality that most non-black people don’t get involved until it effects them in some way they can directly relate to. For me, it’s a bit too little too late, but kudos to those that went and allies that supported this time. Better late than never? 🤷🏿♂️
