Can't you just load it on the room bill so can still get points normally?
I’ve alway been able to charge F&B or other incidentals to the room even with using points. Doing so is a lot easier for the property and ensures you get points. In typical Marriott fashion, the ability to earn points for standalone dining varies by brand and continent. Where it is possible, you’ll earn the same points per dollar as you earn on stays, including the elite bonus. It can be quite complicated for the F&B staff to process, however, and I’ve found that many F&B staff think it’s not possible or don’t know how to do it when it is. Note that this is (confusingly) different from Marriott’s new “Eat Around Town” program, which is just a Marriott-branded version of Rewards Network and is for restaurants participating in Rewards Network (few if any of which are going to be in Marriott hotels).
Marriott brands and locations where you’re supposed to be able to earn points for standalone dining as long as the spend is $10 or more:
1) In Asia Pacific: at Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program, except for Moxy, Element, Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Marriott Executive Apartments, and include restaurants and bars listed on https://marriottbonvoyasia.com/R+B (some exclusions may apply); and
(2) In the United States, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa: at restaurants and bars at the following Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Westin, Tribute Portfolio, Four Points, Aloft and Element
Good luck keeping track of that!
