Nothing like finishing a project, sending the invoice, and then… waiting. And waiting. What’s the most effective but not awkward way you’ve found to chase down slow-paying clients?

By asking for enough money that will finish the job before starting, that even when they delay your balance, you’d not be deep in regrets!

Are they past net 30? Email them and tell them to pay you. They don't reply to the email? Call them. They owe you money. Get it in your bank account.

I'll have my accountant follow up politely first. After another 7 days i'll follow up directly just reminding them it's outstanding and that I can get my accountant to resend it if they haven't received it. If it's still late I'll email again with a deadline for payment and threaten getting a debt collector involved — thankfully never had to come to this.

Do like the credit card companies do. Keep calling & emailing. Hopefully a late percentage is on the invoice.

Is it misleading to just look at Total Compensation from a $ dollar value/ Total Compensation seems to be much more subjective than base salary in terms of its value. Some factors might be:

RSUs granted on dollar value or by # of shares & stock price trends
Vesting schedule
strike price on ISOs & delta between strike price and real market value

For instance, most of value in Amazon's comp seems to be granted in years 3 & 4, but it's well known that most people last only 2 years max there.

I’m a first-time prospective lateral likely to get an offer shortly. I just received a lateral questionnaire that requests billable hours, rates, fees collected, etc. for the last three years. Forgive my ignorance but is this normal/standard? Do people actually answer these honestly? One of the reasons I’m leaving my firm is there isn’t enough work in my group so of course my hours are low.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Question to freelancers: why?
What are the benefits and the odds of being a freelancer and how did you make that choice?

Have you ever regretted your choice?
