The only change has been observance of Juneteenth. Everything else is the same, tired promises as before.

I work in a small firm and I’m the only POC here, but my boss is very receptive to my input about issues in society right now. We even issued a statement on all of our marketing regarding social injustice - I was surprised but happy.

Only POC in our largest office. Leadership has taken notice and posted a promising statement on our website as well as internally. I’m optimistic. I can also say for myself - which helpfully will be helpful to the firm - I have joined a few local organizations in my town to be a part of the conversation and hopefully solution.

I am new to my organization but I’m quite proud that some people, including some executive committee folk, have started the ABA challenge: 21 days of racial injustice. People are willing to learn about their biases and do something to fix it. There are only like 15 people of 300 participating- but that’s something!

Nope. It’s business as usual at my firm. I am one of two black attorneys in a midsize firm.

I’m at a California firm. We are having real discussions. For the first time I can raise issues like the makeup of the firm’s management computer and people are listening.

Starting to restore old watches as a hobby (not for profit). Any suggestions where I can buy some pieces which need repair / service? I am still learning. So it doesn’t have to be fancy. I tried eBay and Chrono24 but didn’t have much luck. Feel free to recommend a local store in NYC.

How do you respond to someone whose response to the recent rise in anti AAPI hate/rhetoric is “I don’t know anyone who dislikes Asians”, “everyone is racist”, “racism isn’t evil, it’s ignorance and biology” in a way that’s neutral and educational?

I’m at the point where I don’t really care to engage but also don’t want to remain silent.

Does anyone stress about student loans? I have $176k in loans and as January gets closer, the panic attacks have gotten worser. I am in-house at a Real Estate company (making $90k), which is terrible bc they are going under due to the market. I am working to transition to big law for pay, job security and more technical skills. I am a 2019 grad and it just seems so hard to break into big law.

I just need advice on what to do. My mind is scattered and stressed! Thank you in advance!

Does anyone feel like it’s difficult to gain acceptance and find allies when you’re a POC? I have attended happy hours, social events, and lunches, but I am not getting the same amount of traction as the other new lawyers who are white. Don’t know whether I should keep trying or just give up. Also don’t know whether it’s my personality or people at the firm. 😢

Basically I feel like a token, and I don't know how to shift that idea while staying professional.

AmLaw200 I interviewed with will likely go with a “more experienced candidate”. I’ve got 8 years and its a staff attorney role so whatever. Partner I met with was rushed from the start like he had already made up his mind. Pissed because they knew from the recruiter that I was a “diverse” candidate and they sent me the Mansfield self-identification survey days before they actually requested an interview.

I handleda very difficult and convoluted succession for a black family. My client was astute and intelligent. We got along great. His family was difficult. Willfully ignorant.

Part of the succession dealt with clawing back $450,000 in insurance proceeds that a niece fraudulent received from the decedent by making herself the beneficiary on policies. A separate attorney was hired to handle that part before I was hired to handle all other matters, including settling a $500,000 debt with the...
