Agreed OP - I love the idea of communism and authoritarianism spreading and growing across the world! Us commies gotta stick together on these boards. Go communism. Go trump. Go Putin. Booo democracy. Boo capitalism. Boo Biden.
I’ll take a strong masculine leader (he rode a horse bareback) like Putin over woke cancel culture libs and their CRT any day. I hope he sends his forces to liberate us from Sleepy Biden and he’s illegitimate administration 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
The leader of one country can’t “declare independence” of part of another country.
To be somewhat fair, calling it “the Ukraine” has long been common usage in the US, too, and I don’t think most of us knew this came from Russian/Soviet usage not the way Ukrainians say it. I first heard the distinction maybe last week.
“Hoping the US will shake hands on the deal”
Did you ever think to ask Ukraine if they are okay with giving away parts of their country? What about the people who live in those regions? It’s not the 1890s and we’re not carving up Africa.
There are tons of Irish Americans living in Boston area. Should Ireland just get that land “because there are Irish people there?”
1) First link is from Russian state Television. 2) the separatists conducting a “poll” is no a reliable source of information
But my main point is I understand that today’s modern borders are messy, with many ethnic groups separated due to hundreds of years of colonialism, world wars, etc. and Maybe in a different timeline the Ukraine government and Russian government come to an agreement on new borders.
But the fact remains there is no “deal” for the US to “accept”. If Russia wants new borders with Ukraine, they can engage diplomatically. It’s not our business to get involved. What is unacceptable is one country invading another.
Maybe we should declare “peace in our time” while we’re at it too?
This is like saying that Mexico has declared Southern Texas independent to justify invading San Antonio.
@OP False. That vote for independence was rejected by both Russia and NATO as being not reliable or valid.

Should we unilaterally surrender Taiwan while we are at it
AD1 - best part? We won’t even have to pay for it!! Russia and China will be paying for the peacekeeping force! Isn’t that genius?!

Shake hands on the deal?
Ukraine is going to still fight for every inch of their land.
The US is here to help, not fight.
Now if Russia messes up and invades NATO, then that’s something else.
Chief
Yes.
Having friends is a good thing, and just because you don’t see it because we live in the US media bubble, NATO countries do a lot for each other, with each allowed to play to their strengths.
The US’s strength is the fact that we were the only country not completely ravaged by WW2 (the UK is just now getting their population back to what it was before WW2). It’s the fact that we are virtually un-invade-able which allows us to take risks other countries can’t. It’s the fact that we have, far and away, the world’s best economy and military.
We’re good at alot of things and we like to be involved. That’s not something to be frustrated about. We do the amount we want to do and it’s a privilege and honor to be side by side with the other NATO countries.
It’s alright to grumble from time to time, but we have a job to do: lead the world and ensure peace. And we’re really good at it.

Any more thoughts today on making deals with Putin OP?

How about instead we shake hands in a deal where Russia is divided into 8 independent states, none controlling more than 1/3 of the current country’s population, territory or exports, and then pick random other countries on the map to exercise sovereign control over each.
Let’s also charge Putin for war crimes
I’m assuming here that Biden is slightly smarter than he comes across and says to Russia, “East Ukraine is all yours and maybe West, too. In exchange you can continue with your natural gas pipelines and don’t take over NATO countries.” Since the Ukraine does not belong to NATO it’s a fair deal
SM1 and that was the right decision then. Just because one country annexes another country is not a pretext for war unless that country declares war on your country. We need to mind our own borders, and we can’t even do that right now
Really looks like an excuse for more
Think of how big your ego has to be if you’re Putin. Sheesh.

The colonization of Africa is far different than the annexation of land populated by majority ethnic Russian and Russian speakers who are in a country adjacent to Russia and want Russian rule.
